Not legally, but some stores have company policies that can penalize for "neglecting to protect against theft" etc. as disciplinary measure (maybe not direct pay from pocket for loses, but there are more ways to harm employee than just this).
Even if it won't harm the individual workers, if it happens a lot then whole branch can get penalized by upper corpo for "allowing" such broad stealing, which can affect every employee there.
In best case, no one gets harmed, including the corpo, in worst case, employees are screwed.
